How To Detect Potential Leaks In Your Home

May 9, 2022 Corey

Leaks can be difficult to find based on where they are coming from. No plumbing experience is necessary to notice your faucet drips in the middle of the night or to discover water under your toilet bowl. You should contact professionals if you notice any of these signs. Risk Free Serv points out some leak warning signs that can lead you to call a plumber to either detect and prevent a potential major leak or fix an ongoing leak. Here are a few signs that might lead to a potential leak inside your home. The best course of action is to react immediately to prevent more damage and restoration costs.

A Sudden Monthly Bill Increment

A sudden increment in your monthly bill is always suspicious. The next time you see a big jump in the amount you have to spend on your bill, and you are certain there is nothing else going on, you probably have a leak somewhere in or below your home. You can compare the bills from the previous few months to be sure the jump is substantial. You can also use a water meter to find out if there’s a leak. Switch off all water sources in your house, and unplug any water appliances. The meter will continue to move if there is a leak, so call a professional to help you detect and resolve it.

Other Signs

In some cases, the signs aren’t as obvious as a puddle of water in your kitchen, and you’ll need to be a detective to find out if there’s a problem. You can investigate further if you notice stains on your walls or ceilings followed by a damp odor. Mold thrives in dark, humid environments, and you can check your basement or cellar for leaks that make conditions ideal for its growth. Remember not to disturb the mold with bare hands or inhale the air around it. Contacting professionals is always a good idea if you don’t know how to protect yourself from mold or don’t want to risk dealing with it.

Outdoor Leaks

You can, again, use the bill as an indicator for potential outdoor leaks. There may be nothing wrong with the inside of your home, and the leak could stem from an open water hose outside. It is not unusual to forget to close the valve after finishing gardening. You might need to replace the hose. Water leaks near your home can cause damage to your home if close enough or wastewater causing your water bill to rise significantly.

Check-ups

The best way to prevent leaks is to react in advance. Why bother fixing something if there aren’t problems? Still, regular inspections can save you a lot of time and money. Detecting leaks early on is essential for every home. Water leaks can be small and irritating but should never be ignored since, over time, they turn into more significant problems and cause greater damage. It’s always best to have professionals do a thorough inspection of your home if you suspect something or if you just want peace of mind. Ensure that your systems are in good working order while also getting some advice for detecting small leaks.

Call The Pros

You need to react immediately if you suspect even the tiniest leak somewhere in your house. Waiting only makes the problem worse. You can call a plumber if you want it done quickly and correctly. Water can be tricky, and sometimes it can take months to show actual damage to property. Prevent major breaks by asking a plumber for their professional opinion.
